Inaugurated in October 2014, the Bosco Verticale is a model of sustainable residential building and a metropolitan reforestation project that contributes to regenerating the environment and urban biodiversity without the uncontrolled expansion of the city having an excessively negative impact on the surrounding area. The two residential towers, 110 and 76 metres high, contain 900 trees (each of which is three, six or nine metres tall) and more than 2,000 plants including a wide range of shrubs and flowering plants distributed on the façades of the two buildings depending on sun exposure. The buildings, covered with roof gardens, are designed to comply with sustainability criteria and to ensure maximum comfort for residents. Boeri's project is a concrete response to the need to redevelop one of the most densely populated areas of the Lombard capital, which represented Milan during Expo 2015. This skyscraper, in fact, is the first example in Italy, and one of the first in the world, of effective integration between the natural and human elements. The skyscraper presents itself as a real forest developed in height: its particular structure houses a large number of terraces jutting outwards and deep enough to allow the proliferation of a hundred different plant species. To illuminate the terraces of the private flats, real green lungs for the city, Linea Light Group has created an ad hoc product: a high-efficiency mini LED projector with a neutral light source at 4,000 K and driver integrated in the body, in an embossed black colour, which has been positioned inside the outdoor flower boxes. These very small projectors illuminate the vertical forest with points of light, emphasising the contours of trees and shrubs that make it so unique and greatly enhancing its appeal.
Designed by Studio Boeri, now Stefano Boeri Architetti (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca, Giovanni La Varra), in collaboration with the building contractor Manfredi Catella (Hines Italia SGR S.p.A.), the Bosco Verticale satisfies an intrinsic need of modern man: the desire to live in a natural ecosystem without having to sacrifice comfort and a lifestyle that combines the history of the place with a contemporary vision.
