Fuerte De Victoria Grande
Integrated lighting wins codega 2015 award
Melilla - Spain
Fuerte De Victoria Grande
The fortress rediscovered
The fortress, built in 1736 to a design by the military engineer Juan Martín Zermeño, later used as a prison and then falling into disrepair due to abandonment, has now become a public space open to visitors, revealing itself, thanks to its strong plastic connotation, as a characterising element of Melilla's urban profile. The lighting design by Francisco Javier Gorriz Sanchez of the Spanish firm DCI was so decisive in the recovery plan that it won first prize in the Lighting Designer category at the third edition of the Codega Prize, an international award dedicated to excellent solutions and achievements in lighting design and LED lighting.

The entire perimeter is illuminated with warm colour tones, almost recreating the red of fire, which gradually fade along the vertical plane, emphasising the construction elements of the entire façade, so as to offer a reading without flat uniformity. The access ramp, built to ensure mobility, has become an element of light integration that creates an evocative atmosphere within the courtyard. A lighting design that faithfully respects the image of the building, dressing it up at nightfall with fascinating nocturnal visions, thanks to the play of light and shadow created by light sources hidden from view.
The project made use of Linea Light Group lighting solutions, chosen for their ability to adhere to the specificity of the building to be illuminated, creating a perfect synchrony between architecture, engineering and lighting design. The Xenia products, anodised extruded aluminium profiles with power LEDs and linear polycarbonate optics perfectly integrated into the architecture, do not visually interfere with the magical atmosphere of the environment. The three different LED colours, designed to recreate the effect of a fire being lit, emphasise the perception of the fortress as a highly evocative place.
