Revisiting Brutalist architecture

The former school building, home of the Lilian Baylis Middle School, was converted, and partly integrated with new construction, into a residential structure with gardens and small squares. The Brutalist-style building, dating back to the 1960s, has strongly materialistic features and rough tones such as exposed concrete and plastic shapes, where light can play and smooth out the tension created by the rigidity of the lines.

The light that transforms

The lighting design studio Nulty+ transforms the external appearance of this complex by incorporating light into the space. By favouring architectural lighting, it was possible to upgrade the extremely strong lines without distorting the origin of the architectural style. Gardens and pathways alternate with small squares and fountains; light finds space to guide people through the intricate network of the complex, transforming the strong tones of the environment into a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Hidden lights, wall washer effects and subtle, delicate lighting succeed in accentuating the boldness of the building without weighing it down, telling its intrinsic story.
