New Kelani Bridge
A new bridge for the Capital
A new gateway linking Colombo – Sri Lanka’s financial capital – to the airport in the north of the city, crossing the Kelani River. Ranked as the country’s fourth-longest river, this waterway sustains transport, fishing, hydroelectric power generation and 80% of the capital’s water supply. The New Kelani Bridge, as it was officially named during the inauguration ceremony held at the end of 2021, is a true jewel of modern technology, built with the aim of improving the chronic traffic congestion that characterises the area around the river.

A play of light on the Kelani River
The six-lane bridge was constructed in two phases, availing of the most advanced Japanese technology. This is the first bridge in the country whose beams are supported by four main pylons and relative structural cables. The bridge’s construction was destined to play a key role in the capital’s growth, which was subsequently accentuated by a state-of-the-art lighting design for the country, rendering this bridge a real tourist attraction, not only for foreign visitors but also for locals.
Archiline and Prolamp
Extending more than 300 metres to traverse the Kelani River, the bridge has been lit by two Linea Light Group high-performance products: Archiline and Prolamp.
The Archiline_PRO W with DMX control system has been installed at the base of each of the four support pylons, both on the road and river sides, to create special lighting effects that transform the bridge into a real element of design.
Reinforcement comes from the Prolamp RGBW projectors installed at the base of the support cables to give added emphasis to the construction as a whole.
The resulting lighting design has resulted in the country’s first “Theme Bridge”, as a civil construction that incorporates spectacular design features never before seen in Sri Lanka. An important challenge that was taken up and won by the team of architects, marking the first important step in this direction for the realisation of future projects.
