HIGH IMPACT OUTDOOR LIGHTING
The restoration of the Hotel De Russie garden’s monumental complex highlight the need to tackle lighting as a complementary design theme with respect to the work on the architecture and the greenery, considering it as an added value to the entire operation. The main objective of the lighting design was to make the complex enjoyable and comprehensible by the user. Great focus was placed on the visual impact of the solutions selected, and the prevention of glaring in the various directions of observation. After the installation and aiming of the devices, the effects of the light were balanced using a management system, thereby allowing the creation of various lighting scenes.

Luxury and prestige in the heart of the Eternal City
Hotel de Russie is one of the most prestigious places in Rome, located between two of the city’s famous squares: Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo. Dubbed “heaven on earth” by poet Jean Cocteau, it is a favourite destination for writers and celebrities, thanks to the prestige and luxury that make it stand out. Its Garden, which forms a unicum with the slopes of the Pincian Hill that it is part of, is considered a work of art and a cultural heritage asset of primary importance. It was conceived by its creator, Giuseppe Valadier, as true outdoor architecture, where the classical styles blended harmoniously with the artificial naturalistic elements, such as the spring rock, the fountains and the lily ponds, and the strictly natural ones, like the plants, the borders and the shrubs. In the past, like today, the Garden is a green jewel set in the heart of Rome and one of its most representative locations. The purpose of the recent restoration project was to enhance all of its parts. A complex job that allowed the Garden to shine once again, in all of its charm.
The concept at the base of the Hotel’s outdoor lighting anticipated the use of lighting techniques complementary to one another using some products from the Linea Light Group catalogue.
To enhance the architecture of the garden, recessed IP67 Paseo_L linear modules with asymmetric optics were chosen. The product highlights the various terraced levels, emphasising the balustrades through the backlighting technique, which also provides functional lighting for the path in certain areas.
Highlighting the path with water, on the other hand, are the IP68 Vigilant projectors with 4000K white and RGB LEDs and 15°, 60° and 120° optics. The product was chosen because it is ideal for enhancing the central axis in a scenic way and because of the chromatic regulation and luminous flow.
To enhance the greenery, moderate uplifting of the most significant foliage was created, avoiding any overlapping with the other systems dedicated to lighting the vertical planes. The product installed is the Suelo_RJ uplight with a protection grade of IP67 and 15° tilting optics. Last, but not least, to light the walkways and stairs, various types of products were implemented: bollards and recess-mounted wall and ground path-markers, all with a minimum IP65 grade of protection. The choice of lighting fixtures was made based on the insertion restrictions, both in terms of minimising the impact on the garden and its architecture, and in terms of the various utility needs connected with the distribution and placement of the power grid.
All the products are managed with DMX control that allows on/off adjustment of the fixtures with relation to the scenes, as well as modulation of both the luminous flow emitted and the colour of the light. The model selected was the Stick-DE3, which allows up to 10 simultaneous scenes to be activated, with a selector of up to 50 static or dynamic scenes, and a dimmer to adjust the lighting intensity and saturation.
