National Museum of Fine Arts in Riga

The choice of lighting solutions was made on the basis of two assumptions: firstly, the intention was to emphasise the majestic façade of the building, which was designed in classical and baroque style by the German architect Wilhelm Neumann. On the other hand, there was a desire to emphasise the great artistic value of the various exhibits (paintings of various sizes, sculptures, small objects stored in glass cases and niches, often displayed in rooms with very large ceilings). 
The light lines of the Xenia bar were used to illuminate the main façade. In this way, the illumination pours in a mantle of soft light, spreading upwards and downwards. For the illumination of the collections and exhibition spaces, 1,300 floodlights were used, about 90 % of them using DALI technology.

For the lighting of the museum's interior, the choice fell on projectors from the I-Lèd collection: Sunrise and Vektor. 
The Sunrise projector, thanks to the high colour rendering of the LED source, gives shape to accents of light that come together in an interplay of volumes and dimensions, highlighting certain aspects of the artwork and architecture of the interior. In the same track is the Vektor projector technology, which instead offers the possibility of shaping the contours of the paintings in a precise manner; the LED technology, combined with the shaping, not only does not spoil the pigments of the painting, but also concentrates the visual focus on the canvas, creating a pleasant contrast effect with the supporting wall.

The choices adopted in the lighting of the museum in Riga therefore satisfied a twofold need, complicated by the need to maintain a balance between aesthetics, technology and functionality. The façade of the building, illuminated in this way, evokes a new aesthetic scenario, the perfect accord between notes of charm and harmony. As far as the lighting of the interior is concerned, the result achieved has made it possible to preserve the magnificence of the works on display from the pitfalls of shadows, which often prevent the total enjoyment of the artistic experience. Architecture and lighting thus become two prevailing aspects in the enjoyment of the museum work, giving the structure an important aesthetic value and a strong identity.
